I came across this scene as I pushed my daughter in her stroller today. Today is “The Day After” for San Diego Charger fans. The day after our choke with the Bengals, the day after we had hopes for the playoffs, the day after our win/loss record trumped expectations. In frustration, a former fan on my street gathered all his Chargers gear and threw it into the street. Who can blame him?
I spoke with the CEO is a high tech company today. He is using the holiday lull to retool a lot of internal processes. ”I know I’m in the right spot, we are getting lots of inquiries, but it’s not translating to sales.” In disgust, he is throwing out past process. Perhaps in his disgust, he’ll also throw out what’s worked the past six years too.
My advice? Don’t blame your process for people being shoppers instead of buyers. Don’t prescribe a solution before diagnosing the problem. Keep a level head and work the real problem.
Maybe next year the Chargers will make it without an overhaul, but with some hard thinking and strategic tweaks. I hope my neighbor kept some of his tried and true threads still in his closet. Hopefully, my CEO friend did as well.
