Business Haiku: McKinsey’s “Preparing your organization for growth”

Gray Suit Marketing is driven by efficiency. The following is a conversion of McKinsey’s article on “Preparing your organization for growth” into a short, simple haiku followed by a brief synopsis and commentary.

Growth preparation
Starts with detecting weakness
And applies a plan

Who’d-a-thought the word ‘growth,’ in business, could present a cause for concern?
It just goes to show that, as humans, we are capable of turning even the accomplishment of our goals into fatal missteps thanks to one forceful entity—change.
We appreciate pattern and habit to such an extent that we allow even positive alteration to throw off our comfort and retract from our progress.
The following is derived from McKinsey’s “Preparing your organization for growth” address on how to accommodate positive change. Gray Suit Marketing provides a synopsis and commentary.
Stifling Structures
  • Assess whether or not existing organizational structures are flexible enough to support the new initiatives. Sometimes they won’t be.
  • Deliberately make these approaches temporary.
  • Don’t let new complexities inhibit the next growth spurt.
Unscalable Processes
  • Determine which processes will come under particular stress when it grows and be certain to pay adequate attention
  • Address small issues before they grow along with your business
Unprepared People
  • Growth naturally creates new interactions and processes, expected and unexpected, and often at a fast pace.
  • Be certain the employees who face the greatest complexities must be capable of taking initiative beyond the confines of their jobs, to cooperate and build linkages across the organization, and to complete many tasks in parallel.
Don’t allow yourself to become comfortable in business. If you’re comfortable, you’re probably not changing. And if you’re not changing, you’re not growing.
Recognize the importance of elasticity in the face of change, but also the significance of emphasizing those practices that brought forth that positive change in the first place.
And remember not to let your uncompromising attention to detail eliminate your uncorking abilities. Celebrate your milestones.
